VA HOUSING

Los Angeles, California

project-1

The landscape design comprises a series of shared open spaces that, set within a lush, park-like setting, unite the community and foster a strong relationship to nature. In support of an active, vibrant and therapeutic atmosphere, the network of meandering trails enables fluid access to places for quiet reflection as well as areas that encourage and facilitate communal gathering.

Views to the existing Arroyo along the western property line visually connect the site to the greater surrounding landscape. Durable, climate appropriate and drought-tolerant plants, sympathetic and adaptable to the local ecosystem, help create a verdant oasis that will look attractive throughout the year. Residents can enjoy the gardens for exercise, play, contemplation, gardening, and community gathering.

The Mediterranean plant palette complements the Mission Revival architecture of the wider VA campus and, in its lushness, relates to the landscaped ‘Greenway’ throughout the campus, which knits together an array of new and old buildings, historic gardens and natural topography. Cultivated, Mediterranean plantings hug the building clusters, bringing detail, texture, and fragrance to the resident's immediate surroundings. A wilder and meadow-like plant culture, seamless with the natural Arroyo landscape, infiltrates the open community areas.
